Always enjoyed Moncur and Lomas putting in a big tackle...

Hartson was probably considered a tough / rough competitor too

Billy Whitehurst probably needs a shout on this thread, too.

He was fucking mental. A tough, tough bloke. A 50-50 between him and the likes of Hurlock etc would rattle a few bones.

Re: Premier League 'Ard Nuts
Hurlock was a tough lad, but too slow: any fighting would be over by the time he got to it. He was so slow, he believed he was contesting tackles he saw on telly the previous week.

Shearer on Julian...

‘ The tackles he put in were designed to hurt. They were there with intent. Some of his tackles were horrible.’

Leon McKenzie and Curtis Woodhouse

Don't think many of the other players mentioned in this thread would have fared well against a pro-boxer.

Re: Premier League 'Ard Nuts
I seem to remember a former player saying that Paul Kitson was the hardest man in the team of that era.

If true that's more evidence that it's usually the quieter, less obvious players who are the hardest. Dicks being the exception to the rule.

Re: Premier League 'Ard Nuts
Not Premiership, but Mick Harford seems to have been pretty terrifying off the pitch.

Tony Coton, his team mate at Birmingham tells this story in the book Football Babylon.

The pair of them were in a pub having a few pints. There were some building workers at the bar. Coton went to the bar and one of the builders said. Are you Tony Coton? He said he was and was told "You're a cunt". Knowing where this was leading he decked the bloke, and got a hammering in return. When he came to, the barman was looking shell-shocked, the builders were all on the floor and Mick was sitting calmly drinking, with blood streaming down the back of his head.

Tony asked the barman what happened - apparently the builders laid into him. Mick got up and demolished the lot of them - taking the first one out with a full length diving header. The barman, trying to restore order, smashed Mick on the head with a baseball bat. Mick turned to him and said "get me a fucking pint". Then he'd gone and sat down quietly with his drink. In some accounts he gave his head a shake, stared at the barman and said "That wasn't a very good idea."

There's a huge difference between being hard, and giving it the biggun knowing you've got loads of protection. Roy keane was the latter, in fact quite a few of these were.

Duncan ferguson, dicks, Pearce. These guys were tough. Still remember Pearce trying to run off a broken leg.

Bolton I used to know used to gonon about how tough one of their forwards was (kevin Davies?)

Although not mentioned I still loved the look on winterburn's face when dicanio momentarily went for him at Hillsborough after the infamous push on the ref.

Re: Premier League 'Ard Nuts
The real hard men are quiet men on the pitch. And their hard reputation is in the minds of players not fans.

We’ve had a list of names put out on here but most of them are pantomime villains. To find out who the hard players are ask a player, a seasoned pro who will get his opinion by playing with or against these people.

Shearer definitely a hard nut never shrunk from a challenge but always played mindful of lasting 90 minutes ( how he stayed on the pitch after assaulting Lennon was probably due to everyone thinking of Lennon as a horse’s arse ). Jack Charlton once asked who he thought was one of his hardest contemporaries said ... guess who?

Can’t believe not a mention for big Johnny Hartson..

My old man plays a round of gold with razor Ruddock now and then. He told my dad years ago just after the Berkovic incident that Hartson was shot to bits, said everyone was a bit weary of Hartson at the club, said he was hard as nails and strong as an ox.

I suppose he wasn’t renown as a hard man to the fans because he was a centre forward and didn’t tackle, but he put it about and guaranteed every tough centre half hated playing against him.

Re: Premier League 'Ard Nuts
Forgotten whose book it was but an old West Ham player wrote that the likes of Vinnie Jones weren't hard, just bullies, whereas the likes of Pat Holland were hard because they just went in hard all day long but with no malice, gave it, but also took it.

Despite being 5 feet 5 I don't remember Mark Ward shying away from anyone and obviously Bonzo and Alvin just quietly went about their business. Seem to remember Mick McCarthy was a tough old bugger.

Hello Mrs. Jones 1:33

Hard bastard and nutcase to boot.

Remember Keane punching him in the back of the head once and Repka just turning round and staring at him.
